

Nelly Rosario is an Associate Professor of Latina/o Studies at Williams College. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University and is the author of the popular novel Song of the Water Saints (2002). Her latest writings include 鈥淟atinx + DNA: Complicando the Double Helix鈥 in Critical Dialogues in Latino and Latina Studies (2021) and 鈥淥n the Origins of O,鈥 in SO WE CAN KNOW: Writers of Color on Pregnancy, Loss, Abortion, and Birth (2023). Prof. Rosario鈥檚 current project, "Doris Rodr铆guez & 鈥楳onocorde鈥: Un fotoc贸mic/A Fotocomic," is a bilingual fotonovela. It will tell the origin story of : a series of drawings that document the everyday working lives of COVID-19 first responders in the Dominican Republic. Prof. Rosario鈥檚 project expands on CUNY DSI鈥檚 collaboration with Doris Rodriguez in 2020, which highlighted Rodriguez鈥檚 work. Focusing on medicine and healthcare, Rodriguez鈥檚 drawings are inspired by photographs and stories shared by doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel on the frontlines at the height of the pandemic. Prof. Rosario will draw from intimate conversations with the artist, related social-media posts, as well as scholarly writings on the subject to create a narrative capturing Rodriguez鈥檚 creative process.
