The Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR) awards this fellowship to no more than seven doctoral students annually who are completing dissertations in the field of Latino Studies. Recipients are selected from six grant-eligible IUPLR member institutions: The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, CUNY Centro for Puerto Rican Studies, The Center for Mexican and Mexican American Studies and the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, The Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston, The Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA, and the Latin America and Latino Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dissertation Title: (2019)
Update: Dr. Rodriguez is the Supervisor of Art Education at the Ministry of Education in the Dominican Republic. Currently, he is completing a book chapter for Dustin & Sinner’s Artwork Histories: Transnational Perspectives in Art Education.

Award Recipient: Nadiah Rivera Fellah, PhD

Dissertation Title: (2019)
Update: Dr. Rivera Fellah is the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Earlier this year, she published an article in the History Journal of Photography titled, “Graciela Iturbide’s Cholos/as Series: Images of Cross-Border Identities”.

Award Recipient: Erin Michaels, PhD

Dissertation Title: (2018)
Update: Dr. Michaels is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Currently, she is working on a book project analyzing how key 21st century education reforms intended to improve education for Latinx and Black are actually mechanisms of educational inequality.

Award Recipient: Luis Guzmán Valerio, PhD

Discipline: Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures

Update: Dr. Guzmán Valerio served as Interim Program Director for the Secondary Spanish Education in the School of Education at CCNY in the Spring of 2020.  Currently, he is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at CCNY and Brooklyn College. A forthcoming publication will be included in Multilingualism, Translanguaging, and CUNY-NYSIEB, edited by the City University of New York-New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals.
