Alex Santana is an arts writer and curator. She holds an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (Focus: Art History) from Tulane University. Among Santana鈥檚 published works are 鈥淒ominican Artists Model Liberation at Centro Le贸n: Review,鈥 for The Latinx Project, and 鈥淭iempo de Zafra on excess and things that could always be more,鈥 for Precog Magazine (2021). Her monograph Archival Dissidence in Contemporary Dominican Art is an examination of the work of nine Dominican contemporary artists (Lizania Cruz, Gina Goico, Johan Mijail, Joiri Minaya, Jos茅 Morb谩n, Ernesto Rivera, Thelma Vanah铆, and Julianny Ariza V贸lquez) who expose the fractures of a hegemonic historical memory in the Dominican Republic. Through performance, intervention, participation, collage, and archival research, the artists propose visions for new futures, ones that emphatically re-incorporate forgotten publics and center their narratives. Santana will recreate a mapping of the constellations of symbols present in the selected artworks, drawing connections between their various artistic approaches. Santana鈥檚 work will provide much deserved attention to the creative productions of Dominicans artists who have made their names in the United States and/or the Dominican Republic. We invite the public to explore the life and works of a Dominican Painter who too left his mark on both nations, Tito Enrique C谩nepa Jimen茅z, whose papers are exclusively available in the Dominican Archives.
