Mathematics in the City (MitC) is a national center of research, curriculum development, and professional development for K-8 mathematics education. The center was MitC was established in 1995 by Professor Cathy Fosnot, as a collaboration between t¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ and the , University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. It has received funding by the , the Exxon-Mobil Foundation, and the . Through the years the project has expanded; today it functions as a think tank and center of professional development for mathematics education. To date, thousands of teachers from across the nation have participated in our institutes and workshops at CCNY. Teachers and schools also seek MitC's support and guidance in their year-to-year operations. Staff developers and consultants from the project provide on-site in-classroom work.

Algebra is a subject with which students continue to struggle. A recommendation that has gained widespread acceptance is to adopt a longitudinal, K–12 approach to teaching and learning algebra. For this to succeed, work must be done to synthesize research on children’s algebraic thinking and to design an effective instructional approach to teaching and learning algebra in elementary grades. Project LEAP researchers are developing a Grades K–5 Early Algebra Learning Progression (EALP) to foster young children’s algebraic thinking and are testing its potential to improve children’s algebra-readiness for middle grades.

Algebra for All (A4A) Micro-credential Program
,  a New York City Department of Education Initiative, and CUNY are pleased to provide teachers with an opportunity to earn a 15 credit micro-credential in mathematics content and pedagogy with tuition and fees paid by CUNY. In order to ensure all students are college and career ready, the A4A Program provides teachers of grades 5 - Algebra I with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of mathematics at their grade level. This initiative focuses particularly on the content that is critical to student success in their grade and essential for later work in Algebra I, and also expands teachers' repertoire of strong instructional practices and strengthen their capacity to serve as content experts in their schools.​

A4A Extension Program - Building Bridges from Elementary to Middle School Mathematics
In partnership with NYCDOE, CUNY has been providing elementary and middle school teachers with an opportunity to earn a tuition-free 15 credit micro-credential in mathematics content and pedagogy. This micro-credential program can now form the bridge from elementary to middle school mathematics teaching. Teachers can use the program to step into middle school mathematics teaching and leadership through our new MSEd Professional Certificate in Mathematics Education and Leadership Program
