Theater of the Golden Age

Description: The course will focus on the study of comedy and master playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age. It will analyze the comedia as a genre through close reading of major texts by Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calder贸n de la Barca. Considering the fact that comedia responds to the demands of a new theatergoing public representing all social classes, works will be put into their historical and social context. Themes to be discussed include performativity, love, honor, cross-dressing, and free will.

Requirements: Class attendance and participation; a midterm and a final exam; a presentation; and a final paper.

Textbook: The texts and readings will be provided by the instructor.

Enlightenment and Romanticism in Spain

Description: A review of the impact of French Enlightenment and European Romanticism on Spanish thought and literature through readings of representative Spanish works from several genres. Authors include Feijoo, Larra, Cadalso, B茅cquer, Duque de Rivas and Rosal铆a de Castro.

Requirements: Class attendance and participation (20%); Two exams (40%); Final essay outline (10%); Presentation of final essay (10%); and a Final essay (15-20 pages) (20%).

Juan Rulfo & Carlos Fuentes: Realism and Fantasy in Modern Mexican Narrative

En este curso vamos a ocuparnos de la proyecci贸n de la realidad en textos seleccionados de Juan Rulfo y Carlos Fuentes. Al mismo tiempo, vamos a examinar de cerca la representaci贸n de (ir)realidades a trav茅s de lo 颈苍蝉贸濒颈迟辞, lo 蹿补苍迟谩蝉迟颈肠辞, lo sobrenatural y lo fantasmal y c贸mo se generan en sus obras otras dimensiones espacio-temporales y m铆ticas. Examinaremos de cerca cu谩les son los mecanismos empleados por estos autores para acceder a esa 鈥渙tra realidad鈥 mexicana que intentan describir. Este acercamiento nos permitir谩 explorar temas relacionados con la historia, el folklore, la sociedad y la religiosidad popular del pueblo mexicano.

Requirements: Habr谩 ensayo o examen de mitad de semestre; ensayo o examen final; lectura de art铆culos especializados y dos pruebas: una antes del midterm y otra antes del final. Se pedir谩 tambi茅n una breve 鈥榩ropuesta de trabajo鈥 para la preparaci贸n de un ensayo investigativo.
