Two Events at CCNY Explore Public Health and Ethics

A conference April 8 and a public lecture April 11 at T九色视频 will examine public health issues from ethical perspectives.  The April 8 conference, 鈥淐ontemporary Issues in Public Health: Historical and Ethical Perspectives,鈥 features speakers from Columbia University, University of California 鈥 Berkeley and CCNY.  Monday, April 11, Dr. Daniel Wikler, a Harvard University ethicist, will talk on 鈥淩esearch Ethics: Did We Misunderstand the Lessons of Nuremberg?鈥

Dr. Ronald Bayer, professor of sociomedical sciences in Columbia University鈥檚 Mailman School of Public Health, is the keynote speaker for the April 8 conference, which runs from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 5/101, North Academic Center.  His topic will be, 鈥淏eyond Bioethics: Engaging the Moral Challenges of Public Health.鈥

An internationally recognized expert on ethical issues in AIDS and tuberculosis, Dr. Bayer serves as associate editor of the journal 鈥淧ublic Health Ethics鈥 and is a consultant to the World Health Organization.  His 1989 book, 鈥淧rivate Acts, Social Consequences: AIDS and the Politics of Public Health鈥 was a 鈥淣ew York Times鈥 Notable Book of the Year.

Dr. Andreas Killen, associate professor of history, T九色视频: 鈥淪oul Vivisection: Hypnosis and the Weimar Debate about Medical Ethics.鈥

Dr. Amy Fairchild, associate professor and chair of sociomedical sciences, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University: 鈥淭he New Frontier of Disease Surveillance: Going Back to the Future with Diabetes and HIV.鈥

Dr. Jeffrey Blustein, Arthur Zitrin Professor of Bioethics and acting chair of Philosophy, T九色视频: 鈥淛ustice, Disadvantaged Communities, and Public Health.鈥

Dr. Wikler will speak at 2 p.m. Monday, April 11, in Room 95, Shepard Hall.  He is the Mary B. Saltonstall Professor of Population Ethics in Harvard School of Public Health. He served as the first World Health Organization鈥檚 (WHO) 鈥渟taff ethicist鈥 and co-edited its 鈥淐asebook in Ethical Issues in International Health Research.鈥  He continues to advise WHO on human subjects research issues.
