Continuing & Professional Studies Open House August 29

Celebrity instructors, including actors Khalil Kain & Lonette McKee, to discuss new offerings

Interested in learning a new skill for today鈥檚 challenging job market or acquiring tips on healthy living? Then head to T九色视频 Wednesday, August 29, for the second annual Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS) Open House. The event, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in The Great Hall, Shepard Hall, will highlight new courses and offer savings on class fees for people who register at the open house.

鈥淥ur course offerings 鈥 both new and existing 鈥 are designed to empower New Yorkers, especially in our community, with the skills and training that will enable them to be competitive in the job marketplace,鈥 said Sharon Mackey-McGee, CPS鈥 executive director.  

Attendees will also be able to meet some of CPS鈥 faculty and staff, including this fall鈥檚 celebrity instructors. Among the notable personalities teaching CPS courses this semester are:

  • Actors Khalil Kain and , who will conduct auditioning classes and an acting workshop, respectively;
  • Thespian Florene 鈥淔lo鈥 Wiley, who will teach a public speaking class;
  • , 鈥淎merica鈥檚 psychologist,鈥 who will lecture on managing emotions for success and,
  • Dr. Lloyd Strayhorn, a renowned numerologist, who will teach a class entitled 鈥淣umbers and You.鈥

The open house will also preview several new certificate courses for qualified nurses seeking advancement in their respective specialties. These include:

  • Gerontological Nursing Review and Update
  • Medical Surgical Nursing Review
  • Critical Care Review and Update
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing

Other health-related classes cover rehabilitation aide training, home health aide certification and holistic health. The latter, which is offered in Spanish as well as English, was designed to address needs discussed at a Holistic Wellness Expo at City College last April that drew more than 500 attendees.

CPS offers a potpourri of multi-session mini-courses and certificate programs designed to help students learn new skills, further their careers or fulfill their love of learning. The choices include a human resources management certificate program, a visual storytelling class taught by former television network producer Richard Martin, and a workshop on how to become a deejay, presented by The Heavy Sound, who will provide music at the Open House.

For professional development, CPS offers courses that increase earning potential such as pharmacy technician, teacher鈥檚 assistant and personal trainer. Training is also available for security guard, CPR and other jobs.

鈥淥ur goal is to be a viable source of exceptional training and educational opportunities and to be a multidisciplinary resource for education for Harlem residents and beyond,鈥 said Ms. Mackey-McGee. 鈥淲e want people to say you can go to T九色视频 to pursue a degree program, for personal development through short-term courses or just to take a fun course.鈥
