City College announces Bernard Malberg Scholarship for pre-med and pre-dental students

T九色视频 is pleased to announce a major gift to establish the Dr. Bernard Malberg Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Endowed Scholarship Fund to support aspiring medical and dental students in its Division of Science.

鈥淲e鈥檙e so very grateful to receive these new funds to help support our students who want to go on to pre-medical and pre-dental programs,鈥 said Dean Susan Perkins of the Division of Science. 鈥淲e pride ourselves on our excellence in teaching and research in science here at City College and as such, to attract so many talented students. To be able to help more of them pursue these important careers is wonderful news.鈥

Bronx native Bernard Malberg (1922-2016) graduated from CCNY in 1950.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attended the New York University College of Dentistry on his return. After receiving his dental degree, he returned to service as a U.S. Navy dentist during the Korean conflict.

Shortly after establishing his dental practice in West Islip, N.Y., Malberg treated his neighbor, lawyer Edward Flower 鈥46, for a cracked tooth. The two became close friends, and Flower also assumed the roles of his unmarried and childless friend鈥檚 personal attorney and the sole trustee of his charitable trust.

鈥淗e was a savvy investor,鈥 said Flower. 鈥淲hen he first approached me (about being the trustee), I asked, 鈥榳hat charity do you have in mind?鈥 He said, 鈥業鈥檒l have you give it away.鈥 He gave me no limit.鈥

Flower said that he had made many gifts over the years in varying amounts to a diverse array of causes, but that 鈥渨e had to do something for City College.鈥

鈥淚n meeting Mr. Flower, and reading about his friendship and professional association with Dr. Malberg, it was evident that building lasting relationships with people was one of Dr. Malberg's great passions,鈥 said Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Communications Dee Dee Mozeleski, who is also the executive director of The Foundation for City College Inc. 鈥淭his new scholarship fund will support generations of students as they begin their post-CCNY lives, and we know they will build their own unique and lasting networks throughout their careers.鈥
