The civil engineering department in T��ɫ��Ƶ’s Grove School of Engineering is the recipient of The (Large Group). The national award is bestowed for “outstanding program promoting licensure, ethics, and professionalism.”

Department Chair and Associate Professor Beth (Ann E.) Wittig will accept the trophy virtually on the department’s behalf at the upcoming National Civil Engineering Department Heads Conference. 

“Licensure, ethics and professionalism are all critical for our graduates because of the civic-oriented work they will do planning, designing, constructing and managing NYC’s civil infrastructure systems while engaging, protecting and meeting the needs of so many stakeholders. We are very proud to be recognized for instilling these critical aspects of the profession into our students,” said Witting. 

The national award is annually given to two institutions per year, one with over 50 program graduates and one with fewer than 50 graduates. 

“To be eligible, over 60% of our students had to take the Fundamentals of Engineering licensing exam which is hard to pull off if it is not required for graduation, a substantial number of the faculty have to be licensed, and we have to have a curriculum and program activities that support licensure, ethics and professionalism. These subjects can be difficult to teach through course work,” Wittig said.

According to the ASCE, the award was first bestowed in 2007 and is named for E. Walter LeFevre who endowed the award to recognize actions in promoting licensure, ethics, and professionalism. Walt LeFevre was widely recognized and highly respected for his extensive contributions to engineering education and practice, to accreditation of engineering programs and leadership of engineering professional organizations.
