Artist and City College of New York professor Carl Fudge presented his exhibit at Galerie Richard in Paris.

This exhibition was the third time Fudge, the director of the MFA program in studio arts, showed his work in the City of Light. Invited by gallery owners Jean-Luc and Takako Richard, Fudge was eager to see how he, a renowned New York artist, would be received in Europe. Richard “has quite an international program,” he said. “He has a few American artists, a few Japanese artists, a few from Belgium and Germany, and a few from Paris, so it's a broad range.”

Fudge described his Slip series, which was the feature of the show, as “explor[ing] the aesthetics of technological malfunctions—as manifested in glitch patterns—capturing the visual remnants of systemic breakdowns. These glitches offer a window into the underlying mechanics of our digital reality, revealing a visual form of disruption.”

Fudge mused about the differences between the various art scenes around the world.

“For me, it’s good to see how my work is viewed somewhere else [other than New York],” he said. “There are cultural differences [in] what people are making in France or what people are making in England or what people are making in Japan or anywhere else. It is a little different, so you do pick up on those differences as to what's happening in the United States.” 

Fudge pronounced himself pleased—and relieved—with the reception to his show, which drew hundreds of visitors during its five-week run.

“In New York, there's a little more pressure because you’re known better, but also people are excited to see what you're making,” he said. “Going somewhere that's a little more alien, where you don't know so many people, I just feel like it's a different kind of pressure.”

The London-born Fudge has taught at CCNY for almost a decade. In addition to directing the studio arts MFA program, he is area head of the printmaking department.
