American Society of Landscape Architects elects CCNY鈥檚 Catherine Seavitt Nordenson as Fellow

Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, director of the Graduate Landscape Architecture Program at t九色视频, is one of for their exceptional contributions to the landscape architecture profession and society at large.

Election to the ASLA Council of Fellows is among the highest honors ASLA鈥攖he nation's largest professional association of landscape architects鈥攂estows on members. It is based on their work, leadership/management, knowledge, and service.

Seavitt Nordenson and the other new Fellows will be elevated to the Council during a special investiture ceremony at the November 2021 ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in Nashville, Tennessee. 

In addition to directing the Graduate Landscape Architecture Program in CCNY鈥檚 , Seavitt Nordenson holds the title of Professor. Her previous academic appointments include lecturer at Princeton University; design critic at Harvard University; adjunct professor at the Cooper Union; Nadine C. Russell Visiting Chair at Louisiana State University; and Harry S. Shure Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia.

Her ASLA honor adds to her numerous accolades. She was a Fulbright Research Fellow to Brazil (2001-2002) and received the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome that took her to the Italian capital in 1997鈥1998. 

Other awards include:

  • J. B. Jackson Book Prize, for 鈥,鈥 from the Foundation for Landscape Studies (2019);
  • President鈥檚 Medal for Service and Leadership from the ASLA New York Chapter (2018);
  • ASLA National Honor Award in Communications for the landscape journal PLOT (2015); and
  • The President鈥檚 Citation for Outstanding Alumni Achievement in Architecture from Cooper Union (2011).

Among Seavitt Nordenson鈥檚 books are 鈥,鈥 that she co-edited; 鈥,鈥 and 鈥,鈥 as co-author. Her next book, 鈥淭he Miasmist: George E. Waring, Jr. and the Sanitary Landscape,鈥 is scheduled for publication in 2022 by the University of Texas Press. 

She was the recipient of a $250,000 Rockefeller Foundation/ US Army Corps of Engineers grant in 2013 to develop 鈥淪tructures of Coastal Resilience: Jamaica Bay鈥 in parallel with the post-Hurricane Sandy USACE North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study. A $90,000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation/ Regional Plan Association in 2017 funded the Four Corridors book and accompanying exhibition.
