Join us for a free screening of the film 脭R脥, in celebration of Brazilian Black Consciousness day!
The documentary 脭R脥 provides an overview of the Black Movement in Brazil during the 1970s and 80s, telling the story of Beatriz Nascimento, an activist and historian who searches for her African heritage. Beatriz researches the history of the Quilombos, African warrior societies reestablished in Brazil to resist slavery and colonialism. Her outlook is poetic and charged with emotion, and this historical interpretation acknowledges and celebrates the contributions of African culture to South American music, dance, language, and beliefs. The screening will be followed by a talk with Beatriz's daughter, Beth芒nia N. Gomes.
